E-Cining

12Jun09

I love Skype… it’s just a really nice app.  Skype gives me the ability to do something called “e-cining” (pronounced e-sinning, but no sin involved), which stands for electronic cinema.  Living in Alabama, I don’t get the chance to spend much time with friends back home.  Skype provides me opportunity to talk to people via the internet at very high quality sound definition for free.  You may ask what this has to do with the cinema or movies…  the answer is something that sounds pretty nerdy.  The process goes something like this:

  1. Call friend on Skype
  2. Select movie on Hulu
  3. Count it off together “1, 2, 3, play”
  4. Watch movie together while being apart anywhere in the world

It may sound strange at first, but this is something that is actually really enjoyable when the option to actually spend real time together is impossible.  I’ve watched movies with people from across the country and even in Europe.  This is not limited to just two people either… Skype allows conference calls that are very stable until you get up to ten people or so.

While not the most practical way of keeping in touch with friends, in a way it’s a very convenient method to stay in contact with buddies and watch a good flick all at the same time.
